Alexz Johnson relishes her independence on “Let ‘Em Eat Cake”

 

Alexz Johnson, whose career began around fifteen years ago when she began acting at the age of eleven, just released her second album “Let ‘Em Eat Cake” this month.  Her fall tour, which began about a week ago, is making two stops in New York, as a part of the CMJ Music Marathon. Johnson spent the Oct. 22 afternoon in the CMJ Press and Artist lounge where she spent a few minutes discussing her latest album with WSN.
WSN: Favorite thing about New York City?
AJ: I love that at any moment there are lives shows you can see.
WSN: Your new album was funded through Pledge Music, how was this experience for you?
AJ: It was awesome.  It was a little bit more work, but it is more gratifying because I get to own everything I do and I get to have control.  I got offered a major deal from the completion of this album and I turned it down because it’s been so nice, having been signed two times in my career and having that fail because of inner label stuff it’s been really nice have control over my releases, my vibe, my music and my tours.  I am really enjoying the freedom, and Pledge [Music] has been amazing, I mean, again it was a lot, but I had my packages sent out, vinyl has been taking a while, so I sent everyone free albums in the mail.  It’s been really fun to be able to so one on one with the people who support me because I don’t really have this like crazy expectation of my career to be some sort of rock star, but I would like to be able to keep the fans who love my music engaged and to have a solid career for the rest of my life.  And that’s my goal
WSN: Do you think you would you release another album through Pledge Music?
AJ: Maybe, I mean who knows, unless some great indie distribution label comes on board and wants to help listen to my voice and help be a part of that.  I like to design my own clothes, and I am very hands-on, so maybe, we’ll have to see.
WSN: What is something you are looking forward to in the future?  
AJ: The music video I’m going to be doing for “Let ‘Em Eat Cake” and touring this album in Europe and South America; I want to go all over the place with it.  I’m going to be spending the next two years touring and putting out songs and making music videos.  There is such a story to this album that I want to do a couple of music videos and keep on touring to have that fund the making of the music videos.  I’m also releasing this really cool “live from the rehearsal studio” for “Let ‘Em Eat Cake” to keep people engaged.  But at the end of the day, as an indie artist, I have the power of my Twitter page and my Facebook page.  And I still leave places having people going, “Oh you played Portland last night? I didn’t know,” so it’s a bit more of a grind, but I like it that way, it feels more authentic because the people who want to be there are there.  Instead of being plastered on a billboard and being shoved down people’s throats, because that’s fleeting and the quicker you make it the quicker people will dismiss you. So I’d rather just grow.

Czyli ten klip to na szczęście nie jest teledysk, tylko wypełniacz. Dobrze też wiedzieć, że nie ma co spodziewać się nowego albumu przynajmniej przez 2 lata (właściwie 3 jeśli dodamy czas na nagranie i miksowanie etc.), chociaż co oznacza "Przez najbliższe dwa lata zamierzam (...) wypuszczać piosenki" nie wiem. Chodzi o kolejne single, nowe piosenki śpiewane na żywo czy może wersje studyjne? Czas pokaże.

Pierwszy koncert Alexz podczas trasy Let 'Em Eat Cake był dostępny na żywo online dzięki radiu uniwersyteckiemu. Alexz zagrała:
This Is Heartache fajne wykonanie, ale akustyczne z Europy mi się bardziej podobało :),
American Dreamer ucięło mi pół piosenki, więc nie jestem w stanie ocenić,
Cologne genialnie brzmi na żywo,
That Pain jakoś mi zleciała, w ogóle nie zwracałam na nią uwagi,
Heart Like That też bardzo fajnie, końcówka ze znanym już zamiennikiem "On my way to New York city...",
Let 'Em Eat Cake taką wersję bym chciała na albumie, ciekawa i nie jest płaska jak wersja studyjna,
Ruthless Love bardzo dobre wykonanie, ale jednak wolę wersję studyjną ;),
Tears Of A Dragon (przy okazji Alexz powiedziała, że jest fanką serialu Gra o Tron) na pewno brak echa jest sporym plusem,
I Will Fall In Love bardziej spokojna muzycznie wersja, na początku co prawda są dziwne dźwięki (chyba, że to jakieś zakłócenia ;) ) ale nie są tak natrętne jak na albumie,
Voodoo trochę odświeżona wersja + "you never let devil in your head",
Thank You For Breaking My Heart naprawdę dobrze jest usłyszeć piosenki z Heart z pełnym zespołem bo dotychczas mieliśmy okazję tylko raz, w listopadzie rok temu, na 100% poszukam i ściągnę dobrą wersję z tej trasy,
Thief o ile nie będzie jej wykonywać cały czas jest okej :)



Po pierwszym występie Cologne, LEEC IWFIL na żywo brzmią lepiej niż na albumie [według mnie]. Cologne głównie przez refren ;)

emmm... po około godzinie Alexz zeszła ze sceny. Jej support grał:
Patric Droney ok 30 minut
Jared & The Mill około 50-60 minut

Czyli Alexz grała tyle co jeden z zespołów wspierających, mogło być dłużej. Alexz brzmiała naprawdę bardzo bardzo dobrze. Mam nadzieję, że będzie rotacja piosenek i Heart Turns Black i kilka starszych się znajdzie na kilku występach.

Hey.. 

What a day. I've been waiting so long for this day... I know you have too..

This album has been 2 years in the making… not out of choice. Life has a funny way of living itself, whether you dig it or not. Actually, some parts of these songs lingered through the past 5 years of my life before becoming full tracks. It’s been a lot of dedication and hard work and I couldn’t have done it without the pledgers and so many talented people I’m lucky enough to not just work with, but also call my friends. Being from the middle of a family of ten – I can attest that it truly “takes a village”.

It’s always a scary time when sharing your music, or art. It sometimes feels weird like “look at me! Listen to meeeee!”
It’s vulnerable. Just because people told you your whole life “you’re going to be a star!” doesn’t mean you believe you are one. Or that anyone should care to hear what you have to say…
I have a lot of respect for those who choose the hands on creative path because it is so hard. It’s so hard remaining driven and positive in such a cut-throat business, while keeping true and authentic to your vision, regardless the outcome, financial stability or online bullying for that matter. Sharing your work through an honest platform, one to one – not pasted on a billboard somewhere for people to believe it's quality before even listening to it – is humbling.

I turned down a major record deal around the completion of this album.
Having been down that road twice, I had the wisdom to know the difference between a fat advance and a nice pick-up line vs. something I own that can breath and grow along with my artistic journey; that can get released. It’s the longer road, but it’s the one I choose.

“Let ‘Em Eat Cake” is a few things to me. It’s my inner thoughts towards an empty industry. Perhaps it’s a personal experience for those who can relate to it…standing up for yourself and remaining who you are regardless the heartache.
Overcoming. There’s love and loss, there’s hope, and there’s a 27-year-old woman finding her own voice. I will always be finding my voice.

Sometimes I wish the music didn’t matter to me as much as it does.
I think this would all be so much easier.
But, I am so blessed. I am happy with this album, and I’m prepared to tour my ass off promoting these songs I sculpted with my bro and the other amazing writers who graced this record.

Można się kłócić na temat tego jak ta kampania była prowadzona, czy było warto etc. Alexz w końcu dostarczyła produkt, z rocznym opóźnieniem. Nie wiem czy uda jej się w przyszłości osiągnąć taki sukces jak na Pledge i KS (sądząc po liczbie niezadowolonych fanów wątpliwe). Może coś wyniesie z tego doświadczenia. Myślę, że większość ludzi życzy teraz Alexz aby na kolejny album (wiem wiem, tydzień przed oficjalną premierą albumu to wcześnie na mówienie o kolejnym ale co tam ;) ) nie kazała nam czekać kolejne 4,5 roku. I żeby ten kolejny album w ogóle powstał.

Let 'Em Eat Cake

Ktoś już otrzymał album pocztą i wrzucił go na tumblr. Somebody Plead jest ukrytym bonusem, czyli bonus jest dla wszystkich, nie tylko dla ludzi z Pledge. Mogła po prostu zrobić album z 10 piosenkami zamiast bawić się w ukrywanie jednej piosenki, ale to już szczegóły. Na razie brzmi nieźle :)


EDIT: Somebody Plead najwyraźniej jest bonusem na CD. Na Pledge w pliku do pobrania nie ma tej piosenki.
EDIT2: Somebody Plead nie ma na albumie. Ciekawe skąd osoba z tumblra miała dostęp do tej piosenki i co ważniejsze co jeszcze posiada.
